NYSOMS Well-Represented at AOA House of Delegates Meeting
[8/22/2011] - Chaired by NYSOMS Parliamentarian David Broder, DO, the the New York State delegation to the American Osteopathic Association's 91st Annual House of Delegates (HOD) Meeting distinguished itself in several ways. Five of the delegation's 21 members were chosen to sit on House reference committees. Former NYSOMS president Richard Terry, DO, was the NYSOMS candidate for the AOA Board of Trustees, and Dr. Broder was once again appointed House Parliamentarian. more

NYSOMS President: Oppose Trial Lawyers Bills in Albany
[5/26/2011] - Dear NYSOMS member,
The Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA) has launched a campaign against four bills recently introduce in Albany that would greatly increase already out-of-control medical malpractice costs. NYSOMS has joined this campaign, and I am urging you to sign a petition opposing these bills.

GOV CUOMO PROCLAIMS APRIL 17-23 OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE WEEK IN NY STATE

Federal Appeals Court Exempts Physicians from Red Flags Rule
[3/29/2011] - A federal appeals court has ruled that physicians who bill patients after providing services are not subject to the expensive and burdensome requirements of the Federal Trade Commission's "red flags" rule. The rule, which took effect last year, requires financial institutions and "creditors" to implement identity theft detection and prevention programs. more

Register for Electronic Health Records Incentives
[1/3/2011] - The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) have announced that registration for the Medicare electronic health record (EHR) incentive program will open Monday, January 3, 2011.
All eligible professionals are required to register in order to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR incentive programs. To prepare for registration, physicians should familiarize themselves with the incentive programs requirements by visiting CMS' official site for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs:

It's Not Too Late to Participate in the AOA CAP Program
[12/21/2010] - One of the programs the AOA offers is the AOA Clinical Assessment Program Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (CAP PQRI). It is a program out of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which includes the opportunity for eligible physicians to earn a 2% bonus payment. 2010 is the last year for the opportunity to receive a 2% bonus incentive. After this year the incentive reduces to 1%. It is the best year to receive the maximum benefit from the program. more

NYS Worker's Comp Board to Increase Physician Fees, Implement Treatment Guidelines
[9/29/2010] - Doctors who treat workers compensation patients will see some important, positive changes implemented shortly, including increases in reimbursement rates and treatment guidelines that authorize most testing and treatments without an insurers prior approval.
The Workers Compensation Board has proposed a new fee schedule that includes an across-the-board 30% increase to the Evaluation and Management services codes, effective Dec. 1, 2010. Over the next twelve months, the Board will also conduct a comprehensive review and revision of the physician fee schedule, as well as other health care provider fee schedules. more

FTC delays enforcement of Red Flags Rule
[6/2/2010] - At the request of Congress, the FTC has now delayed the enforcement of the "Red Flags" rule until December 31, 2010; the Red Flags rule was scheduled to go into effect on June 1. NYSOMS Opposes Expanding Nurse-Practitioners' Scope of Practice
[5/25/2010] - The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS) recently partnered with the AOA in speaking out against proposed legislation that would increase the scope of practice for nurse-practitioners (NPs) in New York State.
State Senate Bill 2948A and State Assembly Bill 765A would expand the scope of practice of NPs by repealing the requirement that they have a written collaborative agreement with a physician. NYSOMS send a Memorandum of Opposition to these bills--signed by AOA President Larry Wickless, DO; and NYSOMS President Sonia Rivera-Martinez, DO--to members of the New York State Legislature. Protect the Doctor-Patient Relationship: Support the Health Insurer Code of Conduct
[10/1/2009] - No matter where you fall in the current debate about health care, everyone should agree that a strong doctor-patient relationship is the key to effective, personalized health care. A simple and important step to protect that relationship was taken by the AOA House of Delegates in July, when it passed a resolution to work collaboratively with the health care community in development of the basic tenets of a Health Insurance Code of Conduct, which supports transparency, corporate integrity, and patient safety and welfare. Now there is something everyone can do to make the code a reality. Physicians, patients and others who care about increasing the transparency and effectiveness of care can visit www.insurepatientaccess.org and add their name to the online petition and read the code. more
