AWARDS CEREMONY CAPS OFF ROC-NY NEW
[4/26/2013] - On April 6, NYSOMS payed tribute to four members of its "osteopathic family" at its President's Reception, held in conjunction with ROC-NY, NYSOMS' 2013 convention. Watch the ceremony on the attached video.The festivities took place at the NYIT Auditorium on Broadway in Manhattan, and included: the NYSOMS Pioneer Award, given to Murray Goldstein, DO; the NYSOMS Educator of the Year Award, given to Stanley Simon, DO; the NYSOMS Presidential Citation, given to Constance Diamond, DA; and the NYSOMS Physician of the Year Award, given posthumously to Gary Rachlin, DO. more

ROC-NY POSTER CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED NEW
[4/26/2013] - Once again, competition was fierce at NYSOMS' Annual Intern/Resident/Fellow Poster Contest, held in conjunction with its annual convention, ROC-NY. This year, 10 research presentations and close to 50 case presentations were accepted.

PASSING OF SHELDON SIROTA, DO
[4/22/2013] - NYSOMS Pioneer Sheldon Sirota, DO, a founder of NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine and Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine-NY, passed away on Sunday, April 21.
Dr. Sirota had been involved in the osteopathic medical profession for more than 50 years. In 2012, he received a Presidential Citation from then AOA President Martin Levine, DO, for his vision, leadership and longstanding service to the osteopathic medical profession. Dr. Sirota was also the 2010 recipient of NYSOMS' Educator of the Year Award.
Our condolences go out to his wife and family. more

AOA, ACGME Move Toward Unified Accreditation for GME Programs
[10/25/2012] - The AOA, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM) have entered into an agreement to pursue a single, unified accreditation system for graduate medical education programs in the United States beginning in July 2015.
During the coming months, the three organizations will work toward defining a process, format and timetable for ACGME to accredit all osteopathic graduate medical education programs currently accredited by the AOA. The AOA and AACOM would then become organizational members of ACGME. more

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS INDIVIDUAL MANDATE
[6/28/2012] - Kaiser Health News reports that the U.S. Supreme Court today upheld the landmark federal health law, affirming its mandate that nearly all Americans carry coverage and retaining sweeping changes to the health industry.
Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. joined the liberals on the court in upholding the mandate, deciding the penalty for not carrying insurance is a tax and therefore falls within Congress taxing power. But the justices voted to set limits on the laws expansion of Medicaid, the federal state program for the poor, leaving up to states to decide whether to participate. more

NYSOMS HOLDS 2nd ANNUAL DO DAY IN ALBANY
[4/20/2012] - On April 17, the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS) held its second annual DO Day in Albany. Close to 100 DOs and osteopathic medical students descended on the state capitol to advocate for legislation that impacts physicians and their patients and to gain recognition for osteopathic medicine.
"Advocacy is not something you learn by sitting in a classroom, and it is not something you learn just by talking about it," NYSOMS President Anna Lamb, DO, told participants at their morning briefing. "Advocacy is something you learn by doing." more
